ENR New York Names 2025 Sustainability Award Winners

September 4, 2025

NY-GEO congratulates the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and its partners on receiving the ENR New York 2025 Sustainability Award. NYCHA successfully implemented the largest geothermal heating system in New York at the Eastchester Gardens and Jackson housing developments in the Bronx. The project team included:
* CSA Group as the A/E designer
* Adam’s European Contracting Inc. (GC)
* Kordun Construction Corp. (Mechanical) as the major contractors
* Matrix New World as the Civil/Environmental subconsultant
* NY-GEO member and Board of Directors President Jens Ponikau's Buffalo Geothermal
This innovative project is the first of its kind at NYCHA and is one of the largest geothermal heat pump systems in the Northeast U.S. To achieve the goal of reducing GHG emissions at NYCHA developments, a highly efficient, all-electric, closed-loop, vertical geothermal heat pump system was designed and installed. This system will provide heating for all domestic water, serving 1,744 apartments across 17 buildings, and is complemented by new, efficient boilers for the central steam plants in each development.
This project significantly contributes to New York State and New York City's goals of reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050.
Awardees will be recognized on November 20 in NYC at The Edison.
