Applications of Wastewater and Thermal Storage
This session will highlight the projects using waste heat recovery and thermal storage and discuss its potential. NYSERDA’s programs supporting these areas are encouraging the exploration and expansion of these important energy components. You’ll hear about individual building projects, campus systems and utility thermal energy network (UTEN) applications.

Ground Heat Exchanger Science & Diagnostics
Simulations and models of how ground heat exchangers will function over time are central to overall ground heat exchanger (GHX) design. This panel brings diverse perspectives on scientific tools that aid in design, verification, and control methods for ground heat exchanger systems. Topics will include a comparison of European and US borehole verticality mapping techniques, borehole logging, Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing, and models for design and monitoring. Panelists will also discuss ways to confirm the function and performance of systems after they are placed in service.

The Urban Driller
Urban centers are the targets for building electrification, since those are the areas of the greatest concentrations of carbon emissions from buildings. Geothermal drilling is hard work under the best of conditions, but when you are surrounded by tall buildings with paved surfaces in all directions - the challenges multiply! Drillers need to have a plan for how to handle all sorts of things, like traffic, noise, ground water, drill cuttings and any special permits required by the state or municipality. This panel will talk about the added challenges of drilling in dense urban environments and steps to ensure a successful project.

Drilling & Completing Geothermal Boreholes for Non-Drillers
This is a Drilling 101 to help non-drillers understand the basics, which will inform better geothermal design and construction decisions. After a presentation on the different types of drilling and the pros and cons of each, we will hear from geothermal drilling contractors who will relay their real life experiences to encourage a set of design and construction decisions that will increase productivity, minimize downtime and prevent costly delays or mistakes.
